Little LDS Ideas- Father's Day Tie

Here's what WE DID at my house:
We followed the directions given on the above blog. We got clear party sacks. Folded the bottom into the point of the "tie" then filled the sack with daddy's and grandpa's favorite candies. Tied closed. Attached saying to back and added a diamond piece of scrapbook paper to top to finish it off!

Explaining Death to Your Children

We had brought to our attention by a Facebook Follower, Megan, that she had recently had a death in the family and needed help explaining it to her 2 year old. Another great follower answered her before we got to her and I think that she had a wonderful idea. We will share her idea and Megan's story to hopefully help YOU if you find yourself in this same situation. We have also included some other ideas we've found. We hope this helps!

The GLOVE exlaination: (from lds.org)

Place a glove on the table. Explain that even though the glove is shaped like a hand, it cannot move like a hand because it is not alive. When a hand is placed in the glove, then the glove can move. Put your hand into the glove and wiggle your fingers. Explain that the glove is like a physical body, and the hand is like a spirit. Our bodies cannot move without our spirits inside them. Our spirits cannot be seen inside our bodies, just as the hand inside the glove cannot be seen.

Point out that earth life was not intended to last forever. One day each of us will die; our spirit and body will be separated. Death is part of God’s plan. When the spirit and body are separated, the body cannot move. It has died.

ANOTHER GLOVE EXPLAINATION: Pretend that my hand is your spirit (hold it up). Each of you lived as a spirit with your Heavenly Father before you came to this earth. The spirit can live and move by itself (wiggle your fingers). Pretend that this glove is your body (hold it up). Until the spirit enters it, the body cannot move. By itself it has no life. When the time came for you to enter this world, your spirit was clothed in your body (put on the glove), and your body became alive. From your birth to your death, your spirit and your body are together (wiggle your fingers in the glove), and you are said to be alive. At the time of your death, whenever that is—in childhood, the teen years, young adulthood, middle age, or old age—your spirit will be separated from your body (pull off the glove and hold it up). Your body will again become lifeless (drop the empty glove). It will not be able to move because your spirit will be gone from it. Your spirit, however, will never die (wiggle your fingers). It goes to be with other spirits who have been separated from their earthly bodies.

Explain that this is what happened to the member of your family. His spirit was separated from his body. We all saw his body lying there like this glove. It could not move or speak. There was no life in it. His spirit was no longer there. Although his body is dead, he is not dead. The part of him that looked out through his eyes and allowed him to think and smile and act, to know and to be—that part of him is his spirit and lives on. He is only separated from his body.

Trusting Our Heavenly Father

Explain to your family that although everything can turn out all right, the time right after the death is very difficult because everyone misses the family member so much. Remind them that Heavenly Father can see and understand even more than the family member can. He loves everyone in the world and is able to know how sad and lonely they feel. Many times he has told us that he loves us and will help us through difficult times in our lives if we stay close to him.

The Plan of Salvation Magnets(Megan):

There's really not a big story. About a month ago, a very sweet little infant passed away in our ward. Her big brother is a friend of my son's and their mom is a dear friend of mine. When I found out, Ben (my son) kept asking me why I was so sad and why I was crying so much. I wasn't quite sure how to explain death to a 2 year old.

I teach Primary (8 year olds) and this year, our first lesson was on the Plan of Salvation. I have found that the kids listen and retain more if I have LOTS of visual aids, so I always try to make something to help me teach. Plus, I keep all the things I make and use them for family home evening lessons. So, I made these magnets to help explain the Plan of Salvation. The one thing I didn't get a picture of was "the clear guy" (as Ben calls him)--the spirit that goes with the body.

During this sad time, when Ben asked what was wrong, I thought of my magnets and I tried using those. He's quite advanced mentally but I still don't think he fully understood much of it. So, I tried the "glove" explanation, but again--not really any lightbulbs flashing above his head. Finally I simply said that "Z" was in heaven. His got a giant grin and his eyes were so bright as he said, "She's with Jesus, Mom!! Cool." It brought tears to my eyes, and I simply nodded. I don't know that he fully understands death, but he knows that she's with Jesus and our Heavenly Father. Which means, in all my failed explanations, I did teach him SOMETHING. :)

My husband's grandma died this past week. Before we went to the funeral I did the glove explaination for my 3 year old. I told him her spirit is with Heavenly Father now. He said, "We need to go find her." That made me smile. He finally understood. When daddy came home, he asked our son, "Do you know where we are going this weekend?" My son said, "Grandma's with Heavenly Father and we're going to put her in the ground." I think it was a good start to teaching him about what a spirit is and where it goes when it leaves our bodies and where it was before we were born. He was so cute to listen to.

I found this idea on Better Home and Garden website. Use a soup can and decorate it to make a cute little flower vase. Can be used every year on Mother's Day or as a pencil holder! So cute, cheap, and easy!

Or how about a cute painting with your childs hand prints. You could include a quote like this... "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother." -Abraham Lincoln

What about personalizing an apron? I thought this would be a really cute idea! Buy a plain apron and some cute fabric. Cut out the desired letter and sew to apron. Or you could paint it with your childs hand prints :) I love the letter one though.. too cute! This picture if from one made and bought from Cafe Press.. you can personalize a lot of different items for gifts!

"Agency in LOVE AND MARRIAGE"

It really is a wonderful talk and he makes a LOT of great point! Here are a few highlights of the talk.. however, if you get the chance GO READ IT!!!!

"Somewhere in the history of the English language the expression “fall in love” began to be used to describe the sublime experience of finding someone to love. While it is a beautiful idiom, there was inherent risk involved in selecting the verb fall because it mostly means accidental, involuntary, with no choice involved. And subtly, it has also led to the use of its distressing corollary, “We fell out of love,” an all-too-common phrase heard nowadays as an excuse for a failed marriage. “Falling in love” and “falling out of love” sound as if love were something that cannot be controlled.

Many who feel they are falling out of love with their spouse throw their hands up in resignation as if they were victims of an outside influence that controls them. They begin to wonder, “Do I really want to be married to this man (or woman) for eternity?” Having fallen out of love, as they suppose, they begin to drift apart, often saying things to hurt one another. “I don’t love you anymore” is a common assertion. They tolerate one another for the children’s sake, resenting one another; or they separate, believing their differences to be irreconcilable. The result is a damaged or destroyed family, another casualty of Satan’s assault."

If a husband and wife are willing to apply the scriptural definition of love to their relationship, even a stale marriage and romance can be revived. Stephen R. Covey relates the following experience:

“At one seminar, after I’d spoken on the importance of demonstrating character within the family, a man came up and said, ‘I like what you’re saying, but my wife and I just don’t have the same feelings for each other that we used to. I guess we don’t love each other anymore. What can I do?’

“ ‘Love her,’ I replied.

“He looked puzzled. ‘How do you love when you don’t feel love?’

“ ‘My friend,’ I responded, ‘love is a verb. The feeling of love is the fruit of love. So love your wife. You did it once, you can do it again. Listen. Empathize. Appreciate. It’s your choice. Are you willing to do that?’

“Of course, I was asking this man if he was willing to search within himself for the character required to make his marriage work. All our relationships follow the contours of life; they have ups and downs. This is why our families provide a critical measure of our character—and the opportunity, again and again to nurture it.”

Scripturally, the Lord is very clear with us on this doctrine—you can’t “fall out of love,” because love is something you decide. Agency plays a fundamental role in our relationships with one another. This being true, we must make the conscious decision that we will love our spouse and family with all our heart, soul, and mind; that we will build, not “fall into,” strong, loving marriages and families. “Don’t just pray to marry the one you love. Instead, pray to love the one you marry.”

We encourage you to read the talk and take the challenge to make your marriage one that can LAST!
LOVE IS A VERB!! It requires ACTION!!!!!!!! Let's make a goal to LOVE our spouse atleast once a day... AT LEAST! That meaning SHOWING them LOVE by DOING something!!! Happy LOVING!!!!!!!!

HOW DOES SHE does this amazing post once a month with FAMILY DINNER QUESTIONS! She says, "They are in a simple form to represent how simple getting to know your family can bring you closer together.

My family and I have been doing this for a year and I have learned and laughed as we answered some of the questions. You don’t have to have kids to do this…how well do you think you know your spouse? your parents? your friends?

Some of the questions are silly some are serious. It spurs on ideas and thoughts to make you and your family think."

I also had a MEMORY (that's my sister's language for "I remembered") of what we did in MY FAMILY sometimes around the dinner table. We did a funny game called "Daffy Dinner" from THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO TEENAGE FUN by Shelley Wille.. great book BTW. Anyways, here is what you do...
"Before dinner, prepare a small slip of paper for each person to read and place it under thier plates. On these slips of paper are written specific instructions for each of them. After everyone is seated at the table, instruct them to read the slip of paper under their plate. Explain that during the meal, each person must carry out the instructions they have been given. For example, one note might say: "Whenever Megan laughs, glare at her and eat something off the plate of someone next to you."
Then during the meal each person watches and tries guessing what the slips of paper said! It is soooo fun and soooo funny!!!! I've made up some more "slips of paper" that you can use for your first time! Click the download button below.

Grocery List & Recipes

Grocery Shopping.. one of my favorite but most unfavorite things to do.. UNLESS I have a LIST! And a list is no good without a PLAN! So, I've been doing good at MENU planning. I decided that I was bored with the same menu items that I always use, so I went searching for some new recipes. I got excited about all of it and decided to share!!
Start Searching! These are MY requirements for a recipe:
1) easy
2) no too much prep work
3) ingredients that are familiar, like what I would find in my shopping basket on a regular basis (1 or 2 different/un "normal" ingredients is fine. (Plays into not going WAY over budget!)
4) tastes amazing- liked by whole family! (maybe ONE brand new/different/going to try something new recipe for the week.)

I also like to hear that other people LOVE the recipes. Soooo, the website I've mentioned before, ORGJUNKIE.COM does a weekly menu and then she keeps track of the family favs HERE! What I find absolutely FABULOUS about this is that SHE is trying all the NEW/DIFFERENT things and I'M trying all the fool proof/ family loves it stuff!

I usually plan for 2 weeks worth of food (dinners) by adding some family MUST HAVES and a few new recipes that I'm SURE they'll LIKE!

I've attached the GROCERY LIST that I just made up. And as far as my MENU.. I keep it on my calendar. So, if you are needing a calendar for this purpose click HERE to make one.. or use your Microsoft Word program to make a cute customized one :)

Aim High

This is the theme we chose for our young women this year. "Aim High" and to go along with "aim" we will be using this target, that I made, arrows and things like that. Our goal with this theme is to get them to realize that Personal Progress, the values, helps them create a lifestyle that will get them to their "target", the temple. (Feel free to click the picture and save it to your computer for printing. This works great for a 4x6. Or download it with a b.o.m. chart below)

As you may know, the Young Women Theme has recently added a value, VIRTUE. Here is what it says on lds.org about it

A Return to Virtue
"Now is the time for a return to virtue!"
The attribute and value of Virtue has been added to the Young Women theme. "Virtue is a pattern of thought and behavior based on high moral standards. It encompasses chastity and moral purity."

The time has come for the young women of the Church to lead the world in a return to virtue. This is the time to be pure and to qualify for the guidance of the Holy Ghost. In the coming year, it is our desire that all young women and their leaders focus on the meaning of virtue, what young women can do to accept and act upon this value, and how this attribute can strengthen young women as they prepare to be worthy to make and keep sacred covenants and receive temple ordinances.

We will distribute through local priesthood leaders and also post online the Personal Progress value experiences and projects associated with this value. We desire all young women to complete and be recognized for completing this value, in addition to the seven values listed in the Personal Progress book. You may want to study the following scriptural references as you contemplate a return to virtue.

"I believe one virtuous young woman led by the Spirit can change the world."

We have also challenged our girls to read the BOOK OF MORMON. Here is a link for Seminary Book of Mormon Resorces. The download button is below. It is a zip file with the book of mormon chart we gave our girls and the "Aim High" .jpeg file also. Click below to download. We wanted a chart that was easy to mark off chapters at a time. With Personal Progress, the girls are reading their scriptures all the time. We want to encourage them to count that as reading the scriptures. We wanted them to know that they don't have to read the Book of Mormon from start to finish, but can mark off chapters as the skip around for Personal Progress, Seminary, Family Study, etc..

There is a wonderful WEBSITE just for the YOUTH now.. CHECK IT OUT!

For the mom's out there. Please encourage your young women to "Aim High" and help them get their medalion! You are now able to do it with your daughter and get YOURS too! They have a beautiful new one with the temple and a ruby on it. It comes in silver or gold. What a great accomplishment it will be!!
I never got mine as a young girl, I missed out. However, I'm going to start working on mine this year!
I believe in the YOUNG WOMEN PROGRAM and know that it is an inspired program! I love my young women!!!

Dinner last night....it was really good.

Here is where I found the recipe and HERE is a tutorial so you don't mess up!

What you NEED!
1 flank steak, about 2 pounds. (I actually used 5 petite sirloin steaks)
1 Tbsp fennel seeds
2 Tbsp black pepper
2 tsp salt
3 oranges
2 Tbsp olive oil
4 sprigs rosemary (I used about 1-2 Tbsp dried rosemary)
4 cloves garlic
cayenne pepper to taste

Mix the fennel and black peppers, crush. Take 1/2 of mixture, add salt, set aside for later. Add garlic, rosemary, olive oil, and squeezed juice from one orange. Coat meat, put in plastic baggy, marinade for 2 hours.

Once marinading is done, remove from plastic, and with a fork, remove the marinade. Coat meat with mixture that was set aside. Cook on grill, each side for about 5 min. (I used a griddle, it's too cold to grill outside!)

Cut remaining oranges in half. Douse open side with a little olive oil and place on grill (griddle). Let cook until slightly brown.

Cut meat, squeeze one of your orange halves over the meat, and serve!

Do NOT give me credit for this recipe, even though it is one of my very favorites that I use almost weekly! My cousin Alisha posted it HERE.

Breadsticks:
What you NEED!

1 Tbsp yeast

1 1/2 cups warm water
2 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
3 1/2-4 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put yeast into warm water. Let sit until yeast dissolves.

Mix salt, sugar, and 3 1/2 cups flour in a separate bowl. Add yeast and water mixture. Blend well adding enough remaining flour to form soft dough. Knead dough for 3 minutes. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

Usually during the 10 minute wait is when I make the breadstick spread.

Breadstick Spread:

1/4 cup soft margarine
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1/2 tsp parsley flakes

Blend ingredients well.

After the 10 minute wait period is up, coat cookie sheet. Put dough in the middle of the cookie sheet and press to outer edges. I usually flour my hands lightly so the dough doesn't stick to them.

Spread topping evenly over dough.

Cut dough down the middle and across with a pizza cutter. Let rise to almost double. Cook for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes one pan of breadsticks.

Now, wasn't that a lovely meal? I wish I had an enthusiastic response from my kiddos! (Actually they liked it, they were just tired.) At least my hubby was a happy man!

"Wow mom, best meal you ever made!"

"It was so good, it put me to sleep!"

Well, I guess it's a good sign that she actually ate it?

Good thing I love being a mom, even when I don't feel the most appreciated!!!

Sweet Pork Burritos(or salad) Cafe Rio Style...

These are possibly one of the best things I have ever made. My family and I LOVE Cafe Rio, they have the yummiest Mexican food. If you haven't had it before go HERE, find one by you and go eat to much and love every bite of it. You haven't lived til you have eaten there I think :)

But when I saw a homemade copycat recipe for Cafe Rio's sweet pork...I almost died, and instantly started drooling. I was so excited to try it since this is what my husband orders EVERY TIME we eat there. I knew I had to share it with you, and I am excited for you to try it too. :)

***I will warn you, this will look like it's a lot of work or a lot to do. But it's really not, it just takes lots of time because you cook the pork in your slow cooker. It's all pretty much dumping everything together, even the rice, and beans...the hardest part is the waiting, it will smell sooo good. It also looks like a lot of steps because you can add the beans and rice, but you don't have to. It would be just as good plain with the pork, salsa from a jar, sour cream and cheese all wrapped up. But I promise it's worth it. And ends up to be WAY cheaper than if you went to Cafe Rio and bought it***

If you want to see the recipe straight from the site I got it from go HERE. They also give the recipe for the Cafe Rio black beans, lime-cilantro rice and their cilantro ranch(my fav, its totally addicting). But I will put it all here too, with things I found helpful or changed. They first used the Sweet Pork in a salad, but since my husband likes it so much burrito, enchilada style I did it that way. We will use the tons of left over pork for salads probably tomorrow :) mmmm I can't wait.

I looked for my camera everywhere to take pictures while I was making all this. But my son thinks its sooo funny to hide my camera and phone in random places... I finally found it yesterday...under the fridge, clear back in the back. nice right? anyway...on with the recipe, hopefully it will be detailed enough so you can follow along.

This is straight from the main recipe, but Ive put my changes or tips in PURPLE!

SWEET PORK
2 pounds pork (I'm not very good at picking out what meat is best for what, so I just told the butcher at the grocery store what I was making and he showed me the different kinds of pork that would be best. I do know though the more marbled and kinda fatty the pork the better it would fall apart. I got something that was in the middle of fattiness and lean so I could attempt to be healthier.)
3 cans Coke (NOT diet) (I bought a liter of Coke, cause it ended up to be WAY cheaper. and I can use it for a marinade or something later.)
1/4 c. brown sugar
dash garlic salt
1/4 c. water
1 can sliced green chilies (I used mild, and the smallest can, I think it's 4 oz)
3/4 can RED enchilada sauce (I used Old El Paso brand, mild spiciness since I was going to give it to my 1 year old. But you can do medium or hot if you want.)
1 c. brown sugar

Put the pork in a heavy duty Ziploc bag to marinade. Add about a can and a half of coke and about 1/4 c. of brown sugar. Marinade for a few hours or overnight. (Overnight is probably best. That is what I did and before I even added the sauce below it was so sweet and tender...mmmm)

Drain marinade and put pork, 1/2 can of coke, water, and garlic salt in crock pot on high for about 3-4 hours (or until it shreds easily, but don't let it get TOO dry). Remove pork from crock pot and drain any liquid left in the pot. Shred pork. (ok..this is the way I did it, and cooked it for 3 hours. BUT next time I am going to cook my pork on low until its cooked, so 8-10 hours. That way it will be even more moist and delicious! But cooking it on high worked fine. ALWAYS make sure you drain it after, before moving on to the step below!)

In a food processor or blender, blend 1/2 can Coke, chilies, enchilada sauce and remaining brown sugar (about a cup, you can add a little more or less to taste..). If it looks too thick, add more Coke little by little. (definitely do the sugar to taste!)

Put shredded pork and sauce in crock pot and cook on low for 2 hours. That's it!

CILANTRO-LIME RICE
1 c. uncooked rice
1 tsp. butter or margarine
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. freshly squeezed lime juice
1 can (15 oz) chicken broth
1 cup water
1 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lime juice
2 tsp. sugar
3 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro

In a saucepan combine rice, butter, garlic, 1 tsp. lime, chicken broth and water. Bring to a boil. Cover and cook on low 15-20 minutes, until rice is tender. Remove from heat. In a small bowl combine lime juice, sugar and cilantro. Pour over hot cooked rice and mix in as you fluff the rice. (this was so so good! My son gobbled it all up by itself)

BLACK BEANS
2 Tbsp. olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/3 c. tomato juice (My son likes V8 juice so I just used that and it worked great!)
1 1/2 tsp. salt (I would say do it more to taste, it was pretty salty.)
2 Tbsp. fresh chopped cilantro

In a nonstick skillet, cook garlic and cumin in olive oil over medium heat until you can smell it. Add beans, tomato juice, and salt. Continually stir until heated through. Just before serving stir in the cilantro. (also SUPER yummy and my 1 year old loved them)

Ok, now...if you want to make the salad this is the recipe for the dressing...if not, scroll down for what i did to make them "enchilada style."

CILANTRO RANCH
1 packet TRADITIONAL Hidden Valley Ranch mix (not BUTTERMILK)
1 c. mayonnaise
1 c. buttermilk
2 tomatillos, remove husk, diced
1/2 bunch of fresh cilantro
1 clove garlic
juice of 1 lime
1 jalapeno (if you like it hot then add the seed, in not and you like it mild, just remove the seeds)

Mix all ingredients together in the blender. That's it!

Here is how we put it all together: First of all, we bought the aluminum deep-dish pans (they had these at the grocery store, you will know when you see them.. they look JUST like the Cafe Rio tins). Lay a tortilla in the bottom of the pan, sprinkle cheese on it, and put in the oven at 375 for about 5 min or until the cheese is melted. Remove from oven, add beans, rice, pork, then ROMAINE lettuce and a little scoop of diced tomato and onions (pico de gallo). Add guacamole (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) and sour cream. Add crushed tortilla chips, a shake of Parmesan cheese, and top with a few cilantro leaves. Serve with the cilantro ranch dressing and there you have it!

SWEET PORK BURRITOS ENCHILADA STYLE!
1 small can of GREEN enchilada sauce
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
2 Cups of Monterey Jack Cheese (I had mozzarella on hand so that's what I used and it was yummy, but I think Cafe Rio probably uses the monterey jack)

Preheat your oven to 350 degree then lightly grease a 13x9 pan.

In a small bowl, combine 1 can of GREEN enchilada sauce(I also dumped the rest of my RED sauce in from the pork, since I only had a little bit left) and 1/4 Cup of brown sugar TO TASTE!

Next fill your burritos with the sweet pork, beans, rice, about a Tablespoon or so of sauce, cilantro, and cheese. Wrap them up, and place them seams side down in your dish. Top with remaining green sauce and cheese.

Put in oven and bake for 30 min or until cheese is melted.

We ate it with homemade guacamole(I LOVE guacamole), and some left over beans and rice.

Soooo that's it! Enjoy! :) I hope you and your family enjoy it as much as we did. Like I said, even my one year old who is super picky loved it! He loved all of it, the sweet pork, beans and rice...

I think this would be a fun FHE dinner, or date night dinner. My husband helped me assemble the burritos, I love cooking with him.

So, you can't tell from my house right now, but I love to be organized. And I'm really good at it. However, I don't know why my house isn't up to "Devyn" par. I'm working on it. We are trying to finish the basement at the moment, so I guess I feel like I should wait until THAT is done.. or any progress I make NOW will just have to be reevaluated LATER. However, it's in my blood to be organized. I'm a list maker and a planner girl. I like to have a purpose (even if that purpose for the day doesn't get accomplished) Anyways, without devulging too much MORE about my failures in this department.. I wanted to share THIS---------->

Music and our families...

I LOOOVE music. I can not carry a tune to save my life, however I think I sound awesome in the shower and Hayden and I are really really good singers in the car. I can kinda sorta play the piano, and I admire anyone who can really play it or any other instrument. Even though I really have no musical talent myself, I adore it... I listen to it almost all day and all the time. While Im cooking, while Im driving, while Im cleaning or getting ready. It always brightens my day and often puts a little extra bounce in my step to get things done or help me have a better day when I am seriously dragging.

Ok, now a little funny story time...
I was 7 or 8 months pregnant, so I was obviously VERY pregnant. So pregnant you are at the point that EVERYONE decides you need advice. For some reason I got lots of pregnant/baby advice in the line at the grocery store from cute little grandma ladies. One particular lady, while we were waiting in line to check out grabs my belly on each side and is asking me about my baby... I am in shock that she is so. so. close and that my belly is no longer my own personal space. We are talking and I am trying to be nice but back away but she gets closer and then starts SINGING! LOUDLY!!! to my belly... while intermittently telling me how important it is to make sure my baby hears music and I sing and read to him while he is still "cooking" in there and that he has good music after while hes growing. When it was FINALLY time to for her to check out, and we parted ways. I was so confused by what happened. I finished checking out, loaded my groceries(which were probably mostly cravings food) and got in the car. The radio came on and I started my regular car dancing(you know you do it too!) and all the sudden am absolutely HORRIFIED by what they are singing about. I quickly turn the radio off and start bawling(darn hormones.) I couldn't stop thinking about what that lady had said about how it effects my baby and how he will learn and grow up blah blah blah... when I finally calmed down and took it all into perspective that my baby really probably didnt hear anything that whoever was singing about and wasn't going to be hurt or anything I did think about how I probably did need to adjust my music a little. For myself and my little growing family...

So I adjusted my music a little, I wasn't ever listening to anything outrageous, but now I make more of an effort to actually KNOW what I'm listening to on the radio and I have some kid's music for Hayden that I actually really like. Some kid's music is sooo annoying. Like pull your hair out annoying. But I found some I really like. I still listen to some music that I can rock out too though :) I still love Beyonce, Death Cab, and 80s music etc :) (I could go on and on who I love to listen to)

I have been singing and playing more hymns around the house. "The Wheels of the Bus" is now followed by "Im a Child of God," or "Families Can be Together Forever," and of course the classic "Popcorn Popping :) I love the hymns. They give such a peaceful feeling to my home. I hope I can teach all of my kids to love the hymns and music as much as I do.

This was one of the very first CD's I ever bought Hayden, we have the traditional Children Songs that I love and he loves but this is just a fun spin on it. I LOVE it and so does Hayden.

This is another CD by the same band that I really like. The "Once There was a Snowman" songs are HILARIOUS! They have spiced up some of the Children's songs and they are so cute. I also really like the song "The Primary Jamboree" and "Peanut Butter and Jelly"

I love love love my Reflection's of Christ CD and Another Testament of Christ CD

I also love Hillary Weeks, Katherine Nelson, Jenny Jordan Frogley and Kenneth Cope(I love EVERYTHING he sings, check out all his cds.)They are great for when I don't really want to listen to some MoTab but Im in a church music, uplifting music mood.

This year I wanted to help Hayden send out Valentine's to his cousins, other family and close friends. I wanted to make it as easy as possible, make something and print it out from the computer, have him color it, add a picture of him, send and done!

HOWEVER! The day I'm going to start the Valentine's, my week old printer DIES!! I was so mad.... its a week old! So now Im waiting for our new one to come...and I had to do the cards the old fashion way. I still think they turned out super cute though!!!

I traced and cut out his hands, cut some hearts and folding the paper in thirds...

after I glued everything, and having Hayden stick on some of the hearts, he colored and colored and colored... :)

We just got our family pictures done a little while ago, so we sent a picture of Hayden and one of our family with the card.(at Walgreen's right now if you buy 25 4x6 prints you get 25 free!) (HERE is the photographer that did our pictures. She is AMAZING!)

Hi! It's Devyn again :) Isn't it nice that Megan let's me crash all here posts! LOL... we made our Valentine's this year too. Well, I made the outsides and the kids colored on the inside where we put a nice little note! They turned out really cute! (I wish I would have seen Megan's first though, because they are super super cute!)

We also sent a picture. But I made them into Valentine's.. I printed this on a 5x7 and cut them apart. The insides had cute scribbles in them. I think they turned out really cute!

We are excited about this monthly post, because we all want to be the best mommies, BUT we KNOW that the best thing we can do for our children is to LOVE our HUSBANDS!

WHAT DEVYN SAYS:

I love the title this month. I feel like that sometimes when I'm trying to think of things to do for my husband... what could I do.... again? Don't get me wrong I love doing things for my hunny, however, sometimes I don't feel like he is getting that I really am doing it because I LOVE HIM still.. and not just doing stuff because I should or have to. I've figured out that its the little things that matter the most and show him that I truly love and care for him.

I found this cute little story from LDS.ORG that I want to share. I think she is so right, and I admire how great they were at spending quality time together as husband and wife! DATING AT HOME might take a little thinking, but I think that it might be really fun! Please read this story...

"In Malaysia, the idea of dating one’s spouse after marriage is almost unheard of. My husband and I first learned about this counsel from books and magazines and from American Church members who lived in our branch in the city of Kuala Lumpur. When we heard of the good that can come to a couple who continue to court each other after marriage, we decided to try this “foreign” idea.

In the beginning it was easy for us to spend an evening together because we had no children to worry about. However, when our children began to come one after another, we had to devise new ways to date each other. Because finding a baby-sitter for the evening is difficult, we have had many dates at home after the children are in bed. These home dates are in no way inferior to those we occasionally have outside our home.

We have found a number of activities we enjoy doing together. Sometimes we watch a videocassette while munching snacks and sipping soft drinks, just as we would at the movie theater. Other nights we play computer or board games. Our evenings spent in these activities always end with laughter.

One regular activity is putting together our family photographs on a large poster. Later we frame the finished poster and hang it on our stairway wall. We now have quite a few posters, so we rotate them from time to time. Evenings spent making posters are not only fruitful, but they also bring warm and sentimental feelings to our hearts.

One Valentine’s Day I prepared a candlelit dinner for two. With soft music in the background, the atmosphere was truly romantic. Dating each other regularly has helped increase the romance in our marriage.

Our list of activities for home dates continues to grow. We have found that dating each other is about finding ways to spend time together and about taking time to build and nourish each other. When days are difficult and challenging, I look forward to our home dates when we can spend time together just talking.

My husband and I have found this “foreign” idea to be of great help in strengthening our marriage."

Dating at home ideas: Romantic dinner, playing a game, baking together, watching a movie with popcorn and blankets, dancing, etc.. What are some dates you've had at home?????

WHAT MEGAN SAYS:
Ahhh, Valentine's Day. Have you felt the love in the air this month? I think Valentine's Day is such a fun holiday. Especially now that I'm a wife and mom(to be honest I use to hate it...but now its a blast!). The hubby and I have been married 2 years, and unfortunately sometimes I feel like the romance has been sucked out by what I like to call... "THE ROMANCE VACUUM'S"

Exhibit A:

Is he not the cutest little thing ever?!?! And we love him to death, and can't get enough of him. But if you have kiddos you can understand me. By the end of the day I am covered in some white crusty something,(spit up maybe, left over banana?), I am exhausted from playing "chase," "cars," "monster," and a variety of rough, loud, noisy games the little man likes to play. And I wouldn't have it any other way... But by the end of the night when Cory(the hubby) gets home from work I am pooped! I just want to veg out and eat treats and not move until the next morning when I get to see that busy boy's happy little face again :)

Exhibit B:
School, work, homework, work, life......BLAH! Cory works long days and then has school work on top of that. So not only am I exhausted so is he. And if you are anything like us exhaustion=grouchy, well sometimes...

Life is just so hard and chaotic sometimes, and it's hard to focus on what really matters. My relationship should never come second to housework, homework, or even the little man... it should be FIRST. all. the. time. And unfortunately I forget sometimes. But not ANYMORE!!! Thanks to New Year's Resolution's, the help of this "woo" post, and some of YOUR brilliant ideas(I know you have some so please share!) our marriage is going to be first! I want Hayden and the rest of our children to know how a marriage works, and how we all work together....

So this year for Valentine's Day we had to do it early because I am going out of town for the weekend.. BUT I had some V-day surprises ready....I knew we couldn't go out and do anything, because by the time Cory gets home from work it is WAY to close to Hayden's bedtime, and two we don't really have anyone to watch him. But I had our fancy, chill, romantic, night in all planned out in my head what it was going to be like... We were going to have a picnic on the floor with a homemade heart shaped BBQ chicken pizza, with sparkling apple cider stuff, and his favorite cookies, and treats, and we were going to watch our wedding video, and massages, Hayden and I "heart attacked" his door and wrote a bunch of reasons why we loved him, the house would be spotless.. it was going to be perfect.

It WAS going to be perfect...but things don't ever come out how I want. I got almost everything done that I wanted. Here is Hayden "helping" me "heart attack" daddy :)

Then everything was clean and ready to go... I had wrapped his presents. I got the game Scattergories from Walmart for 20 bucks! And Hayden gave daddy the movie Sandlot :) So I started dinner. Umm there are no pictures after this point because... well... I set my kitchen on fire. Well, not the whole kitchen, just a pan with bacon in it. Hayden had fell and smacked his head and I ran to resuce him, leaving the pan of bacon. So, ya, fire..which makes LOTS of smoke, which sets off the fire alarm, which scares Hayden, which makes lots of crying... umm ya... so sorry.(no one was hurt, it wasn't that bad, just LOTS of smoke.) So needless to say, dinner wasn't even close to being done when Cory got home. Which ended up being BETTER! I had the pizza dough all done, but Cory helped me put together the pizza which was so much fun! It's funny how things work out....

So in the end it was a hilariously funny, chill, romantic night. We played our new game(so fun), made and ate the yummy pizza, watched our wedding video and reminisced about how long ago it seemed, gave relaxing massages and just talked and talked(the rule was not to talk about work or school or anything like that though). It was so fun!

Feel free to steal the pizza, picnic, game or whatever ideas you want.. I would suggest leaving the fire and smoke out of it though. And pretend I have a picture of my pretty table, with the presents and treats and hearts and candles here :) see it? ohhhh so cute....

Anyway......
THIS is the pizza dough I made. THIS is the recipe for the bbq chicken pizza. And THIS is one of Cory's favorite treats, he had been begging me to make them for weeks(they are seriously addicting, so you've been warned). THIS is the fun game I gave him or us really... I didn't want to do the traditional V-day gifts. One, Cory doesn't really care about sappy, cheesy stuff like that...and two, we can use the game for more fun dates to come!!

WHAT SARAH SAYS:
When it comes to Valentine's Day, there's just not much excitement or surprise year after year sticking to the traditional ideas of Valentine's Day gifts. If I wrote my husband a poem, he'd probably throw up. Not because of me expressing my feelings, he's just not a very sensitive, sentimental guy. Chocolate, sure. But not very exciting. Dinner? Well, who is going to watch the kids, especially this year on a Sunday? I could get him a gift, but if I want to make him HAPPY with a gift, it would likely be too expensive for us to afford.

On occasions like this, we've found it most enjoyable to DO something we both like. We know it's unrealistic that we are going to get each other the 'perfect' gift. It would just be disappointing if that was the expectation.

Last year, I made 3 invitations for my hubby that I left in his car throughout the week. One was an invitation to lunch that I put on the steering wheel before he left in the morning, and I met him at his school in Salt Lake with a couple of subway sandwiches. The different atmosphere was exciting and SO romantic! The next was a game night invitation. We played monopoly while watching one of our favorite movies, and I made chocolate covered strawberries. The third was for a 'picnic.' I set up a romantic, candle lit dinner in the living room on the floor! Our girls attended that one, dressed in princess dresses. Each one of us took turns dancing with the 'Prince.' It was a very special Valentines that none of us will forget, and all for the small price of food! Now how much more meaningful is that compared to a box of chocolates or a wrapped present?

I came up with a list of DATE IDEAS. I think spending time together and creating memories is the best Valentines gift you can give your loved one!

1. Surprise him at work by showing up with a lunch you made including some of his fave foods, or send a lunch with a Valentine's note inside.

2. Book a hotel without him knowing. Call ahead and have dinner set up in the room before hand with flowers and dessert.

3. Dedicate the night to getting to know each other. Ask each other 30 questions each over a relaxed meal or steak dinner.

4. Have a reminiscing night; look at photos of when you first met, watch your wedding video, or listen to some of your favorite songs, and talk about the memories you've made. All this while drinking hot chocolate by candlelight.

5. Take your man to a nice restaurant, but have him blindfolded before getting in the car until he's seated at the table. Have a thoughtful note waiting on his plate.

6. Cook dinner together with your left arm tied to his right. Enjoy a night of laughs and good times!

7. Make a picnic on the living room floor. Lay out a blanket and light lots of candles around the room. Make heart shaped pizza and serve fresh fruit with fondu.

8. Have a progressive dinner. Eat an appetizer at one restaurant, main course at another, and dessert at another. To make it sentimental, go to restaurants that are memorable and that you would frequent while dating.

9. Go shopping and pick out gifts for one another.

10. Take your sweetheart for a carriage ride. Bring a blanket and hot chocolate, and cuddle the evening away.

11. Try something you are both new to, like ice-skating. You'll have a ball learning something new together.

12. Print out a list of '10 reasons I love you.' Leave them in various places you know he will find, like the mirror, his car, his pillow, etc.

13. Go play in the snow at midnight. Have a snowball fight or build a snow man. Then finish the evening with lots of cuddling and warming up!

14. Instead of your usual 'going to a movie' routine, go to a concert or play, and get dressed up for it.

15. Go skiing together, then warm up afterward in a hot tub.

16. Fill up the bedroom with balloons; helium balloons to cover the ceiling, and regular balloons to cover the floor. Have a board game and popcorn on the bed with some music playing.

17. Leave a 'meet me' card in his car for when he gets off work to somewhere in the community, like a bakery. When he gets there, have a cake ready for him with a note of another place to go. Have the final destination be your home. Be all dressed up with dinner ready!

18. Clear an area in the house that would work for dancing. Have soft music playing while you eat dinner, then dance the night away!

19. Go to a museum or planetarium, or any place conducive to hand-holding.

20. Give him a 'HEART ATTACK!' Cover his car or room with hearts that say things you love about him or words of significance to your relationship...or cover his car with chocolate kisses while he's at school or work!

21. If it's warm where you live, rent a canoe and watch the sunset on the water.

22. Print out coupons for future dates like 'one free massage' or 'one candle lit dinner'. Make an entire booklet and let him pick which ones he wants to use on Valentine's day.

23. Have a camp-out at home.

24. Play scrabble, only require that all words must have to do with romance or your relationship.

25. Get some magazines and each cut out pictures that remind them of the other person. Make a collage out of the pictures!

DARLING Cookie Bouqets

Our great friend Lora sent us this cute cute idea! And I fell in LOVE with these cookie boquets! Thanks Lora!!

I just got done making these DARLING cookie boquets and I thought I would share them with you! They are fun to make espessially with little kids, I have noticed that in the past when I let little kids decorate them, they come out WAY cuter!

Receipe for Sugar Cookies
1 1/2 cups Sugar
2/3 Cups Butter

2 Eggs

2 Tbls Milk
1 tea Vanilla
2 1/2 tea Baking Powder
1 tea Salt
3-4 cups flour (I usually use a little more so the cookies don't spread out so much).

Bake @ 400 degrees for only 6 minutes (if you bake them too long it will make them hard.)

Frosting
1 pound Powdered sugar
1/4 cup Light corn Syrup + 2 tbls
1/4 cup milk + 2 tbls

The frosting is pretty runny but with the corn syrup in it it makes it perfect to be able to place in a bag to make your boquet!

When I make the cookie dough, I roll it out pretty thick (because you are going to press it on top of a stick so you don't want to be able to see it.)

Then when I frost them I am pretty careful, because like I said the frosting is pretty runny...

Aren't those the cutest things you've seen in a while?

I also made sugar cookies yesterday. Mine aren't as creative, but I have to say that my recipes are delicious! So I wanted to share too :)

Soft Sugar Cookies

3 1/4 cup flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup sour cream

Into a bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and salt. In a mixing bowl, cream butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla with an electric mixer. Beat for 2 minutes. Add sour cream and half of the dry ingredients; beat 1 minute. Stir in remaining dry ingredients with a wooden spoon. Divide dough in half and roll each portion out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place cookies on greased cookie sheets; bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Store sugar cookies in an airtight container.

Cream Cheese Frosting

2- 3 oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened (or 1- 8 oz. is what I do :)

1/2 cup butter, softened

2 tsp. vanilla

4 1/2 to 4 3/4 cups powdered sugar

Beat together cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gradually add 2 cups powdered sugar, beating well. Gradually beat in enough remaining powdered sugar to make frosting of spreading consistency.

(Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting- Prepare as above, except substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for 1/4 cup powdered sugar.)

Then, I like to separate my frosting and color it different colors before using :)I know, fun! Right?

I will also use that same frosting for my cupcakes that I make. I will post a picture here when they are done, just so you can see how cute they are :)

What is so great about sugar cookies is that your kids can help you with them. Rolling the dough out, using the cookie cutters, and eating them :) They will LOVE how the flour gets all over and the memories they are making with you! A family that COOKS together, stays together... right?

Strawberry Cupcakes

Here is where I got this recipe!
You need:

1 3/4 c all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 c sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c vegetable oil
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 pkg frozen sweet strawberries or 1 cup (10 oz) crushed fresh strawberries mixed with 3 Tbsp sugar
red food coloring as desired!

Mix together flour, baking soda, and sugar in a bowl. In another bowl, beat together eggs, flavoring and oil until well blended. Add strawberries and beat at slow speed of mixer until berries are partially broken. Beat in flour mixture slowly until smooth.

Pour batter into muffin tins, filling to half.

Bake at 350 deg F for 30 minutes, or until they test done.

I just couldn't resist smothering them with chocolate! Then powdered sugar for a pretty finish.

Then I added the Valentine's Day flag. I am so festive!

So, I just stumbled upon a new blog. A friends of mine, Ashley, has this sweet little blog about her beliefs, or should I say our beliefs?... anyways, and I just wanted to share. February's Home Art....

I love the idea of having my kids art as art work in our home. Framed for everyone to see. I hope it makes them feel special and lets them know how proud of them we are. I am also hoping that by the time I have kids in elementary this will help eliminate a million coloring pages on my fridge....

Once a month I make a coloring page for Hayden to color, paint, stamp, sticker, whatever. He is only 13 months so what he does right now isn't to much. But he LOVES it. He loves feeling the crayons and experimenting scribbling on the paper. He loves the huge hugs and kisses he gets from me after he makes a beautiful masterpiece! :) It's also a great learning time. I can draw shapes and talk to him about them. I can color with him and talk about the colors. We draw people and I we talk about their eyes and nose. I love arts and crafts, its so easy to make learning fun and the possibilities are endless of what to teach.

With his finished masterpiece I bought a cheap frame and it's now hanging as part of my Valentine's Day decor.

I also made one for any of your kids that are older. It just says, "I love my..." and then they can color the words and hearts and draw a picture(s) of what they love. Mommy, their stuffed dog, speedy the turtle, tater tots, sunshine, makeup...whatever :)

Hi! It's Devyn.. I asked Megan if I could go in on this post with her. I thought she had a great idea to have the kids color something and then display it in a frame on the wall. I have a spot in my kitchen that this will work perfectly! Only one problem, I haven't got the frames yet. SO the cute picture just went up on our fridge (where it was supposed to stay off of with this great idea) LOL and heaven knows I need help cleaning off my fridge!! Thanks Megan!!

FHE: Work/Help in Home PLUS Super Cute "cHoRe" Charts

First, I want to start with the SUPER CUTE CHORE CHARTS! I got this idea from my friend Joni (I wish I could share,but her blog is private! Dang it!!) THANKS JONI! They were so much fun to make and even cuter to look at!

I decided that my 1 and 2 year olds were getting big enough to have "chores" around the house. I think they can have a little responsibility. I think it will help them learn that they need to start picking up after themselves. Which hopefully will be a life long skill they will develop!

Since they are so little, I thought of 5 easy things they could do (or already are doing) for their chores. 1.Make Bed 2. Get Dressed 3. Study (read a book/color) 4.Pick up Toys 5. Brush teeth & hair

Soooo... here is what I did:

1. Decide what you want your magnets to be. *they are the "check off" when a chore gets done. I picked flowers for Abby & Trucks for Jaxon

2.Glue flowers together with cute buttons (if desired) or assemble any other ideas that you have.

3. When your cute things are all assembled, glue a magnet to the back of each item. Let dry and tada they are ready.

4. Get together all the things you need for the board. A clipboard (Joni used a metal sheet, to hold on the magnets. I, however, couldn't find any at the store I was at so I got these for .94 and some magnetic strips), paper, mod podge, brush, scissors, etc..

5.Glue, using the mod podge, the paper onto the clipboard.

6. Then glue words/chores onto the paper using the same technique. (I think vinyl would work good too)

7. Next, mod podge over all the paper you just glued on to give it a nice finish. And so the paper won't get ruined in use. (Remember it dries clear)

8.Now, if you need, apply the magnetic strips for magnets in desired spots.

9. You are done! Put magnets on and admire your work!

So, when they complete a "chore" they can put up a flower/truck next to it to mark it off the list!

Now, I wanted to make this a family home evening, because I think teaching your kids to work and help out around the house not only is good for them, but it's good for the whole family's happiness.

I put together a lot of ideas for different lessons and stories, so that this can go into your FHE KIT and be a lesson that can change and work for you every time you use it! The most wickedly awesome frosting EVER!! (with Homeade Oreo goodness)

Well... it's Superbowl Sunday. The husband is watching the game, my baby is down for a nap, church duties done for the day, wings in the oven(I hope they turn out), and now... to eat these bad boys:

Helllooo yumminess! Homemade oreos are pretty much one of my favorite things EVER. They are so good and so easy to make.....

You will probably notice that a lot of my posts might be devoted to food(especially lately I have found killer good recipes)... I love food. I love cooking it, I love baking it, I love eating it... My hips, butt and gut don't love it so much though...

Annnyway, one night I was indulging myself with one of my hobbies that helps me relax. Which is, looking at recipes and food websites and blogs. While searching my regular web food stops, I came across the most glorious frosting trick EVER!!! (Thank you Betty Crocker, I love you...)

Betty calls it "White Truffle Frosting." mmmmmmm......So here we go the best frosting ever!

White Truffle Frosting
Melt 1 Cup of White Chocolate Chips in the microwave until smooth. Then let cool. Then whip in 1 tub of vanilla frosting until fluffy...
You can also do this exact same thing with chocolate frosting! Just melt 1 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips and whip them into chocolate frosting! I guess that one would be called Chocolate Truffle Frosting :)

And that's it! It is seriously so amazingly yummy. I tinted mine pink for Valentine's Day. I thought my Oreo's turned out so cute.

Again, like the cupcakes I posted about earlier, I HATE frosting cupcakes, cookies, pretty much anything... Im to much of a perfectionist and it bugs my that I cant get it perfect. So I filled my pastry bag with the pink deliciousness and piped it on with the big star tip. Done. Pretty. Cute. YUMMY!

THIS is the recipe I used for my Oreos, and look how cute and festive she made them for Valentine's Day... if you happen to do this(she has directions on her blog, so check the link), PLEASE send pictures. :)

Family Motto

It seems like everyone these days is soooo stressed about money, and life, and just making it. Everyone is struggling with something...Some days are good, and some are harder. My microwave is setting our food on fire(particularly Hayden's veggies, I think Hayden probably planned it all on purpose so he doesn't have to eat his enemy the vegetable), but there was a silver lining today, a possible job opportunity for Cory... My point in all this rambling, is there are triumphs, and disappointments in life and I found a FABULOUS quote by President Monson that is now going to be our own, "family motto," so to speak. We live in an apartment and won't be here long or I would splurge to get it in vinyl...but until then I made this:

and it is going right above the light switch right next to the front door where we can see it all. the. time :)

I feel so uplifted whenever I read it. I want to "live greatly!" I want my family to "live greatly!" I know Heavenly Father is looking out for all of us and I hope you find this quote as comforting as I do. If you would like it for your own home, car, scrapbook, or where ever..... download it

We Have Special Families

Ok, I put this handout together for my primary class for this Sunday. They can be used for FHE too! It goes along with the Primary 2 lesson 6. The thing I love about being a primary teacher is I get lots of ideas to do for family home evening for my YOUNG kids! So here is a preview:

This first one is for the child to draw a picture of his/her unique family!

This one is for older kids. They can think of an acronym for the word family! Like 'Fun,' 'Always there,' 'Musical,' 'Important,' 'Laughter,' 'Young and old,' etc.

Chocolate covered HEART brownies!!!

I was inspired by my friend Kaylee to try covering something with chocolate. What better than brownies? These are so cute and perfect for Valentine's Day!

1 pkg brownie mix (and ingredients required on directions. I know, I'm a cheater!!!)
3/4 package of vanilla almond bark
red food coloring
decorative sprinkles
wax paper

Start by making brownies according to directions on box. Allow to cool COMPLETELY.

Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes in the brownies.

To keep intact, use a spatula to remove cut-out. Put brownies on a sheet of wax paper.

Heat almond bark in a sauce pan on low, stirring to prevent scorching. Mix in food coloring to desired pinkness.
Plop a blob of the bark onto a brownie.
Use a small spoon to GENTLY spread over entire surface.
Sprinkle immediately after applying coat. Allow to sit until almond bark is hard.
Cut around the edges once dry. Then serve...enjoy! Makes about a dozen.

Love Birds Paper Craft

You may have already seen this idea since I posted it last year...but it's still a good one! Mostly because it's easy enough for kids to do, and cute enough to use as decoration in your home!
What you need:

Valentine's scrapbook paper, and stickers as desired
Poster board or card stock
Paper clips
Glue
Scotch tape
Single hole punch

First, cut out bird shapes from poster board or card stock.

Trace the same shape onto decorative paper and cut it out.
Tape paperclips like so onto the poster board piece or card stock.

Glue the 2 pieces together, decorate with stickers. Then punch a hole for the eye.

Ta-da! The final product! They are so cute how they stand up by themselves!

Love One Another....in action!

I just had to post this...I used Devyn's fun family home evening tonight with my girls...and along with creating a loving home, we also got festive! Click here for her download-able Love One Another FHE!

We just cut up a whole bunch of different sized hearts using different types of scrapbook paper and decorated them! Of course, using Devyn's template! Then we decided we were going to make our own banner to hang in the kitchen so we could all remember what we learned. And now, you get to enjoy some cute pictures of us having fun!

My kitchen is STARK white! If it was my house, I would paint. But the point is, it looks a little less drab with our hanging heart banner!

My mom got a great idea from www.theideadoor.com for Visiting teaching. And I love it!

Here's what you do: buy your sisters a 5x7 frame from the dollar store. print out a quote/scripture/thought from the visiting teaching message. give to your sisters when you visit them. THEN every month, they will have a new "picture" to put in their frames to display and remind them of the message for the month!

Valentine's Day Treats :)

Well, it's Day 1 of this cute little blog?! Don't ya love it? Are you as excited as we are... I knew it :) Anyway what better way to celebrate our "Grand Opening," than with TREATS!?! Heart cupcakes and rice krispie treats...mmmmmm. Ok, So here we go.
(side note: I am not a photographer in any way, shape or form unfortunately. So hopefully you will get the just of how cute these little treats turned out.)

Chocolate Dipped Krispie Valentine Pops:

Who doesn't love rice krispie treats right? And these are soo cute. I have done them for the 4th of July too but with popsicle sticks. So, first just make your rice krispie's you can find the recipe HERE if you don't already have one.

Does this make anyone else really ridiculously happy? mmm the gooey-ness....

Press the warm rice krispie treats into a buttered 13x9 pan. I like to rub butter all over my hands to prevent them from sticking. Then take whatever cookie cutter's you want to use and press them into the warm rice krispies(but not too warm, there is a middle warm that I found worked best. If they are to hot they will just fall apart.)

These are my cute V-Day cookie cutters. I mostly used the medium ones.... But you can do whatever you want. I think using the X's and O's would be cute.

Next, put a popsicle stick or sucker stick in the middle of your treats. I kinda like the popsicle sticks better because they are a little thicker and hold up the treats better. But sucker sticks work great too. That's what I used this time. Then you put them on a pan and then in the fridge or freezer for 5-10 min. During this time I melt my chocolate almond bark.

This is Almond Bark, you can find it in the baking section at Walmart or probably any grocery store.

Take your treats out of the fridge(the coolness of them will help set the chocolate faster), dip them half way in chocolate, sprinkle them immediately with the sprinkles of your choice and lay them on wax paper or foil... Then DONT TOUCH THEM! Let them set all the way up. If you dont they will fall apart and be ruined... it's tragic. I had this happen and then I had to eat it...darn it! :)
But this is them finished:
I just needed to wrap it in cellophane and put a ribbon on it. Cute right?! And delicious....

(I might be crazy, but I think next time I will add a little bit of peanut butter and a tish more rice krispies....I think that would be super yummy with the chocolate!)

HEART CUPCAKES:
So my cute husband got me these:

I know right!!! So so sooo cute. I love them... I LOVE silicon baking products. Im a little embarrassed how excited I was and am about them. I know you can find them at Walmart or Target for like 5 or 6 bucks. BUT!! A little heart cupcake shaping secret... if your kids have marbles or something like that, put the marble in your cupcake tin and shape the cupcake liner around it. BAM! done, instant heart shape.

Here is my final product of cuteness: :)

Ok, now onto my ultra secret cake making recipe. I honestly don't remember where I learned about this secret. But I have seen the Bakerella do it, so you know it's good. :) and i guess not all that secret...but I think it sounds cool saying it's a "secret" hahaha...so there...

Cake Recipe:
Mix together,
1 (18.25 oz.) pkg. yellow cake mix (you can do chocolate cake too)
1 (3.4 oz.) pkg. instant vanilla pudding (use chocolate pudding if you are doing a chocolate cake. but I have done chocolate pudding in a yellow cake too and it is sooo yummy)
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup warm water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, fill your cupcake liners and bake for 22-25 min. Remove from pan. Cool completely, then frost how you would like.

Secret tip #1: Ok, now, you might notice I made mine purple, pink and yellow. So fun right? I do this a lot. Ive made Birthday cakes and cupcakes this way with whatever colors I want. All you do is divide your batter and mix in your food coloring. Then spoon in a little bit at a time. There is really no messing them up. They come out cool and pretty every single time.

Secret tip #2: I kind of hate frosting cupcakes with just a knife or spatula or whatever. One I think it takes forever, two Im a perfectionist and I can't ever get mine perfect the way I want. So enter my pastry bag with tips. I LOVE them. They make frosting cupcakes or decorating cookies, etc easy, fast and fun. Even though I have a pastry bag, I usually just fill a gallon size bag, cut a hole in a corner, and put one of my tips on it. It makes clean up SOO much easier. I can just throw it away :)

Secret tip #3: The little chocolate hearts I have on the cupcakes are from extra chocolate bark I had from the rice krispies. Put your left over chocolate in a sandwich bag, cut a LITTLE, tiny hole in one of the corners. On wax or parchment paper squeeze out the chocolate to make hearts...or flowers, or whatever. I usually just free hand it. But you could draw on your paper and trace it if you wanted. :)

FHE: Love One Another

This is the family home evening I am doing tonight. I've done it for the last few years now, and it's great to help us in the month of February to remember to show our LOVE for eachother!

Now, keep in mind that my kids are 2 and 1, so I keep it VERY simple. However, I have found quite a few ideas for the lesson for older kids and teenagers. There are a lot of ways that we can show our love.

The way I do this lesson, again becasue of the age of my kids, is very simple. I cut out hearts to put on our front window. (And it makes it look like I decorated for Valentine's Day too, from the outside) Then I put the names of people we love on the hearts (ex. Mommy, Daddy, Grandparents, Aunts & Uncles, Friends, Heavenly Father & Jesus, etc...) then on other hearts I put ways we can show our love to those people (ex. hugs, kisses, share, play nice, pray, read scriptures, serve, go to church, etc...) Then for the lesson, we just talk about just that.. the people we love, and how we can show our love to them. And we hang up the hearts on the window. I know brilliant, right?? LOL. All joking aside, my kids really love this! They remember doing it last year and they are excited to do it again! I love that it is easy and interactive. And what I love MOST about it is that we are reminded all month long to show our love to eachother!

You can also, sing a song, do a scripture, and prayers. And then of course do a treat! Stay tuned for treat ideas for the month of FEBRUARY!

I've wanted to have a place either on my computer or in a box, where there are many ideas to use for those nights you need a lesson quick. I've wanted to make it easier to do family home evening.
